Eclipse 2019

Eclipse is a light installation work based on a motorised sculpture that has been assembled from found components. The motor drives a small studio light to the wall where it presses itself against the wall as the room becomes darker, creating a ring of escaping light reminiscent of the corona seen during a full solar eclipse. The motor waits a few seconds and then reverses slowly, allowing the light to spill back into the room. The work continues to alternate between light and dark until the viewer leaves the room and the work switches itself off.

The idea for this work came from me wanting to find a mechanical way to dim the light in a room. That thought developed into this work, whose only function is to manually control its own light output by pushing itself against the wall in a repetitive and seemingly futile act of self denial. This work has not been publicly exhibited.
